Distribution Services

Award-winning Innovation:

Allen Press sends out several million individual pieces of mail per year, so you can count on us to provide the support, quality care, and superior results that you need during the distribution process. As recently as 2001, our distribution services director was recognized as the United States Postal Service (USPS) National Mail Center Manager of the Year. This award recognizes the achievement of supplying significant cost reductions through the inventive use of postal products and services, including: drop shipments, firm bundling, mail consolidation, and automation, to name a few. For more details about our distribution services or to request a postage estimate, contact your Allen Press representative.

List Handling:

Mail lists can be sent electronically using several alternatives, including: via email to your assigned Account Manager or directly to our processing department, via our FTP site, or on disk. We provide distribution services for hundreds of organizations and process lists that come to us in a variety of formats. Upon request, we also merge-purge and de-dupe lists to help remove multiple occurrences of addresses and to identify unwanted addresses. Processing your list with our software results in a dramatic reduction or even elimination of returned and/or undeliverable copies because of bad addresses.

U.S. Distribution:

We provide faster delivery time by verifying the domestic mail on-site and bypassing the area Post Office. The USPS makes daily pick-ups from our plant for direct injection into the postal stream at the Bulk Mail Center (BMC) in Kansas City, which is just 30 minutes away. Automation rate postage savings are made possible through a refined sortation of your mailing list. Allen Press provides Coding Accuracy Support System (CASS) certification bar-coding requirements that are needed to achieve the lowest postage rates available for your respective mail permit. We also find that our centralized location in the U.S. helps reduce postage for publications with a broad national readership. We utilize numerous USPS programs that help improve cost efficiencies and delivery times, such as drop shipments, palletization, co-mailing, firm packaging, and more.

International (Non-U.S.) Distribution:

All of our international distribution service offerings are faster and less expensive because we utilize a host of postal consolidation products to the fullest extent. Most of the scholarly journals distributed by Allen Press have an international readership of 20 to 30 %, which is why we are very mindful of the importance of collaborating with leading international distribution service providers. A key feature of our foreign rate structure is that it is based on the weight per ounce, and not by the pound. Most other international postal products use ¼ pound or per pound pricing, whereby you have to pay the higher weight cost when mailing. Because we charge only by the ounce, you will not incur additional expenses. Allen Press can provide you with 3 cost-effective delivery options with expedited delivery standards associated with each, including:

  • Allen Priority Airmail When you want your mail there fast, Allen Priority Airmail is the dependable way to get your mail to your readers. It's the expedited "no-worry" answer for your time-sensitive material. This service is as fast as if not faster than regular International Airmail and it is 25% less expensive than traditional USPS Airmail Letter-Post delivery service. Normal delivery times range from 2–3 days to Canada, 5–7 days to Europe, and just 7–14 days to the rest of the world.
  • AllenAir — When you want your mail on time and your budget on target, count on AllenAir to get your printed items to your readers reliably and quickly. AllenAir is our exclusive international air/surface distribution service for individual publications and bulk packages outside of the United States. It is comparable to the USPS International Surface AirLift (ISAL) delivery service, and is a cost-effective way to send printed material such as publications, newspapers, periodicals, catalogs and direct mail. Normal delivery times range from 5–7 days to Canada, 9–15 days to Europe, and 16–23 days to the rest of the world.
  • Allen Global Economy — When you want your mail there economically, Allen Global Economy is the reliable method of getting your "less time-sensitive" printed material to your readers. This service is designed to have delivery times that are comparable to the Publisher Periodical surface rate but at reduced costs. When meeting your budget is crucial, and delivery time is not as critical, this is the no-worry economical answer for your global distribution. Normal delivery times range from 8–9 days to Canada, 10–22 days to Europe, and 16–35 days to the rest of the world.

Inkjetting and Labeling:

The address can be applied directly on the publication for self-mail pieces or onto a mail carrier sheet, which is then inserted along with your publication in a polybag. We also provide Cheshire labeling. We have a pressure-sensitive labeling system with the ability to apply the label directly to the publication or to the polywrap. We can also laser-print specialty items for a customized look.

Polybag:

Allen Press introduced the use of this clear plastic mailing system in 1972, and it has now become the most widely used form of distribution in scholarly publishing. Polybagging offers some key advantages, including:

  • Superior resistance to scuffing, tearing, and water damage
  • Auto-insert up to 3 additional mail pieces or supplements with the publication
  • 2-millimeters-thick polywrap, with more durability than the materials competitors use

Bulk Shipments:

Allen Press has identified more than 10 of the fastest and/or most cost-effective freight carriers to help distribute your less than truckload (LTL) and Heavy Weight bulk shipments. We use drop shipments, palletization, shrink-wrapping, bulk boxing, and other specialty packaging methods to ensure that your shipments are delivered safely and securely. Packing slips are included with each shipment showing the number of copies shipped, the number of boxes, and the number of skids with their associated weights.
