Journal Publication Series "We send Science around the world" Allen Press, Inc. March/April 1995

Allen Marketing & Management: An Evolution

Traditionally, the Allen Press Newsletter focuses on how news from around the world impacts scientific and scholarly journal publishers. In previous issues you've read about global concerns such as librarians' buying trends and the impact of the Internet on subscription bases.

Now we center on some news closer to home: specifically, the official name change of our Association Management Division to Allen Marketing & Management, and what this means to you.

This change reflects the emphasis on complete management and publishing services for this division. We now offer expanded business management and marketing services such as conference book and journal displays, book order processing, back issues fulfillment for books and journals, price studies, feasibility studies, and readership surveys.

In addition, Allen Marketing & Management provides new services to benefit publishers: meeting management; executive directors; on-line services such as electronic bulletin boards, membership directories, and list services; SGML; copyediting and managing editors; and fund raising.

Our customers benefit from knowing they can rely on one resource to meet their publishing needs. Many small-to-medium sized publishers cannot afford the full time staff needed to successfully implement these projects. The effectiveness of volunteer help may vary significantly from year to year. With the expanded capabilities of Allen Marketing & Management, publishers can meet their specific needs by choosing from the modular services available.

In this newsletter, we discuss the evolution of Allen Marketing & Management—and how this publishing services division of Allen Press will make your job easier. What began as a small department of Allen Press in the early 1960's has grown into a separate division of our company. We look for continued growth as we help you meet the opportunities and challenges that face scientific and scholarly journal publishers in the 21st century.

Benefits of Allen Marketing & Management to Publishers

Allen Marketing & Management

Allen Press responds to the needs of our customers. One example of this is the development of our new division, Allen Marketing & Manage-ment.

In the 1960's we listened when customers told us they needed a fulfillment bureau to process their subscription payments. Thus, Society Services was born. In the early 1980's customers told us they needed guidance with promoting and pricing their publications. We responded with the development of our Marketing department. In the late 1980's when the library budget crisis was hitting many publishers hard, we combined Society Services and Marketing into one operation: Association Management. Now, with the electronic publishing age upon us, we offer a complete and separate division of Allen Press: Allen Marketing & Management.

These internal changes reflect the rapid changes currently facing the scholarly and scientific publishing community. In fact, two conditions—global buying trends from librarians and the impact of electronic publishing and the Internet on subscription bases—threaten to have a tremendous effect on publishers who are not prepared to deal with them.

Just when the U.S. librarians were facing budget cuts, the dollar was dipping to record lows, thus re-ducing further librarians' buying power. The librarians responded by first raiding book budgets to pay for journals, but later by cutting into journal acquisition and renewal budgets. Some librarians began to advocate "access" instead of acquisition. Renewal rates for all but "core" journals began to suffer.

The Internet is opening on-line access of publications to researchers. It is no longer always necessary to own, or even use, the printed version of a journal. Document delivery companies can provide only the articles researchers need. As more faculty have ac-cess to the Internet on their personal computers, the erosion of subscription bases will likely continue.

As a result, forward-thinking publishers are left wondering how to take advantage of the opportunities presented by the electronic age while stemming the tide of subscription losses.

Allen Marketing & Management Responds

With our 30-year history of providing publishing services to associations and the renewed emphasis and energy of Allen Marketing & Management, we are uniquely able to handle the needs of your association in the 1990's.

To counter the effects of a tighter library market and to enhance benefits that associations can offer to their members, Allen Marketing & Management is providing new and expanded services.

Associations will benefit by offering their members more for their money. This is of increasing importance as membership dues are raised to offset the loss of subscription dollars from libraries. Electronic services will be a future source for both member and subscriber revenue.

Journal and/or book publishers will benefit by using one resource for their electronic publishing, business fulfillment, marketing, advertising, editorial, and warehouse fulfillment needs. By establishing this alliance, you can rely on a single resource to understand and meet your specific needs.

New Allen Marketing & Management Services
Available to Associations and Journal or Book Publishers Include:

Meeting Planning

We will work with you in every detail of meeting planning: site selection, registration, material design and production, exhibitor sales, corporate sponsorship, and negotiations for hotel, travel, and catering. During your meeting, our representatives will be there to ensure that everything is handled as smoothly as possible.

Executive Director

Small-to-medium sized associations can benefit from the services of an executive director and save money by sharing costs with other groups. Your executive director will manage budgeting, assist in grant proposals and contract negotiations, facilitate long-range planning, develop member services and offer extensive officer and committee support.

'Access to Uncover' Document Delivery Service

Through Access to Uncover, your members and readers can search free of charge via Internet the article titles and authors from more than 16,000 scholarly journals. They are also eligible for a discount on delivery of the full text of articles.

Electronic Catalogues

Librarians and researchers with Internet Gopher access can view the new electronic version of the Allen Press Cooperative Subscription Catalogue by gophering to our dedicated Internet connection at gopher.allenpress.com. Publishers will want their titles included because users are able to search by title, subject field, or word, then download an order form to their printers and send subscription orders by fax, phone, or mail. Information will eventually be included in the on-line edition of the catalogue that will not be included in the printed version. Also, the on-line version is continually updated throughout the year providing libraries and researchers the most current information.

EPIS (Electronic Publishing Information Systems)

This newest area of Allen Marketing & Management is developing an automated system to convert documents created with our typesetting software into SGML documents to be used immediately or for future publishing opportunities. Prototypes are in development for Internet accessible electronic bulletin boards, membership directories, list services, and web services. These will be available by mid-1995.

Fund Raising

Allen Marketing & Management will work with your association officers to determine the goals and strategies for successful fund raising. Together we will provide professional assistance with strategic planning, assessment implementation, management and support for each stage of your fund raising effort.
